Giacomo Costa: “Private Garden”, 2009, Installation, 24 light boxes, 53rd Biennale di Venezia / picture.myself.

I adore the fusion of photographic and digital techniques of Florence-based photographer Giacomo Costa. He creates new fantastic spaces mostly based on futurist topics of architecture or urban space.

The notion of an extended moment – transformed in a room-sized installation called ‘The End‘ from Ragnar Kjartansson for the Pavilion of Iceland is probably my personal favourite of La Biennale di Venezia 2009. Several screens and soundtracks were featuring different instrumental arrangements, while the combination of all amounted to an awesome country-sound, made by Ragnar Kjartansson and the musician David Thór Jónsson. The performance was originally recorded in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and became, presented as a loop, a space that led you immerge in an absurd scenery and made you simply forget about time.

from a correspondence between Ragnar Kjartansson and his friend and fellow artist Andjeas Ejiksson:

“I imagine the Venice Pavilion being a lighthouse at the end of the world, watching the verge of nothingness. Waves chasing the lost souls and the mist blurring the horizon, protecting you from the vertigo of the abyss. It is a nameless sea and sitting on the dock is a man without fate”

“[...] The protagonists of Krzysztof Wodiczko`s projection in the Polish Pavilion at the 53rd Art Exhibition in Venice are immigrants, people who, not ‘being at home’, remain ‘eternal guests’. ‘Strangers’, ‘others’ are the key notions at Wodiczko`s artistic practice, be it in the projections, the Vehicles, or the technologically advanced Instruments that enable those who, deprived of rights, remain mute, invisible and nameless to communicate, gain a voice, make a presence in public space. last chance, last dance. creating worlds (I)

Unbelievable, but, at last chance, I managed to visit La Biennale di Venezia 2009 titled ‘Making Worlds’. What I found in the pavilions at Giardini partly left me cold. Better to say, the  single pavilion`s architecture was quite more interesting than most of the artwork: Whether the context was hiding away or the whole stuff was circling around the so individual and extraordinary personality of the so interesting artist – I could hardly find stuff challenging criticism or provoking reaction. In most cases the exhibition rooms`architecture beared no relation to the artwork, the whole gained randomness. Exceptions were the Austrian pavilion, that catched my eye with the exalted painting style by Elke Krystufek, the Korean pavilion with treating installations and sculptures in an atmospherical way you only get after an intensive discussion, the Netherlands` pavilion where I loved the video-installatons, the sounscapes and their interpolation with the showroom. I couldn`t get pictures of all I liked, but will show some in the following posts.

[On the pictures: art as only art can be - Nathalie Djurberg`s colourful, sweet-bitter and wild fantasy-creations of world, breaking with visual habits, questioning the perception of beauty and cruelty.]

I´m aware of the very romantic and even cheesy aspect of amusement parks, but they catch me each time again.. Let it be Tivoli in Copenhagen or the Prater in Vienna (on pictures above), may it be morning or night..In Vienna it gets too busy for me at weekends, but as I live in the neighbourhood, I quite often got the chance to walk around and spy out some more scurilities..

I`m actually busy with lots of exciting stuff, some of it can be seen below: I`m visiting a photography studio at University of Applied Arts Vienna, learning the analog base of photography with a reflex camera. Yes, it`s totally anachronistic in times of fast digital cameras, but I´m absolutely exhausted, for the immediacy of light, and sureley the possibilities of a reflex cam, are damned flashing.
This weekend I´ll be out in Venice, catching the very last chance of visiting Venice Biennale. Let me see, if even I will catch some more pictures of the exhibition to post them around next week…

I passed Johannes Vogl`s installation ‘O.T. (Lichtung)’ near Praterstern/ Vienna several times, before taking a few minutes to stop by, walk around it and finally put my head back. Just a small change of perspective and the installation became accessible to me: the image of a glade with a real natural background – real heaven shining through a visual net of drawing-like wood. It´s a kind of calm visual intervention, that immersively hints at the ongoing visual transformation of an area, seen as a problematic and criminal one, to a branded district facing the futuristic image of a city.

Beside this fantastic artwork, there are more installations, sculptures and iconic works from Marita Fraser and Alex Lawler, Sonia Gangls, Nikolaus Gansterer, Christian Mayer, Viktoria Tremmels and Andreas Strauss’ to be explored up to December 1, 2009 around Fluc, Praterstern, Vienna. It´s the second time ‘Urban Signs – Local Strategies’ curated by Ursula Maria Probst, Walter Seidl und Martin Wagner takes place around the Fluc – area and hopefully there are more to come.
