I recently visited the wastelands belonging the Nordbahnhof (Vienna`s northern railway station) a 75 hectar plot of wasteland, located in Vienna`s 2nd district. The area once hosted a paraffin depot and some coal bunkers and became point of departure for escaping Jews in 1938. A few years later, the station was used as route for mass deportations.
Since then, the land has been disused and been one of the rare undefined territories in Vienna – currently there´s a major urban development project raring to go: about 10,000 flats, offices, shops and additional social services are going to give rise to a new urban quarter which will be finished until 2025.
