hacking the city.

“Imagine, you ought to behave in private life like you do in a company with an access control system..which would permanently record the doors you walk through and where you move…” [Daten-Schatten. Wie die Computer dein Leben kontrollieren“, 1984]

Contemporary urban culture and city life are more and more stigmatized by the advancing privatization of public space, political indifference, a culture of consumption while lacking spaces for protest. Hacking the City (July 16 – September 26, 2010) is an experimental project which is questioning the failure at, and in public space. The project utilizes virtual as well as physical space to discuss the changing structures in public life. Various artists, musicians and designers perform in the city of Essen (European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010) , you can visit the project place at Folkwang Museum Essen that hosts documentation, workshops and lectures and last but not least there`s a blog to visit.
